Tips for a bad haircut

So what do you do if you find yourself in a similar situation? Celeb hair expert, Philip B, has got some great tips to help a girl in need!

“You got a haircut that you really, REALLY regret? We've all been there. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to ease the growing-out process:

1) Experiment with styling products to enhance your hair's texture and movement. Pink's hair is so flat that it's making her face look heavier than it is. A short, Jean Seberg crop like this looks far more flattering when you muss it up and make it a little spiky and crazy. This automatically makes your face look a little more angular, and gives your style a waiflike, gamine feel. I'd use the Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist to give the hair lots of lift and some Philip B Jet Set Hair Spray to spike it up and lend some firmness.

2) Condition your hair like crazy! If your hair looks super shiny and healthy, that's what people will notice, not the bad haircut.

3) Invest in some hair accessories like thin black headbands and some sparkly clips to give your style some direction and draw the eye away from the haircut beneath! I love the look of a smart short haircut with the bangs swept to the side and held with a pretty little bobby pin. At the moment, I'm really into the ones that are embellished with tiny fruits or birds: They're so adorable and French-girl chic!”

Spring Wedding Updos

At Sunday’s Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan, Redken Creative Consultant Guido finished Milan Fashion Week by creating two separate looks – one feminine, a Sicilian-inspired loose twisted chignon and the other a bit more masculine, a French twist quiff. "The looks at Dolce & Gabbana were a classic play on femme fatale, where women played with their masculine and feminine sides, it is very fun and liberating. The feminine look is how I would imagine a Sicilian woman to put her hair up for the day in a soft updo – very matronly and womanly."

Create the Look's

Feminine:

- Prep hair with layer lift 07 for extra body and volume and roll 4 large rollers in crown portion of head.

- Take out rollers and create a big beautiful blow with messy center parting to help prep for the updo making sure to blow dry the front bang portion forward over the forehead.

- Lightly twist sections on either side until they meet in the back of the head and secure with pins.

- Gather rest of hair and twist into a very loose chignon pinning into a swirled chignon.

- Let bits fall out naturally around the face.

- Finish with forceful 23 for added hold but spray lightly as to not look weighed down or heavy.

Masculine:

- Prep hair with generous amounts of structure wax 17 classic styling wax.

- Leave out a section at the front and pin this up into the 50s looking quiff.

- Part on the side and gather hair at nape of neck and twist up toward top of head pinning as you go up. Until all hair is pinned in.

- Pull out bits on the side just in front of the ears and let drop down 2 inches to create 'sideburns' and then secure remaining end of hair back into the rest of the updo.

- Finish with heavy amounts of forceful 23 to hold the look in place.

Rock the Look: Jada Pinkett Smith Braid-out at 2011 Grammys

Celebrity hairstylist Marcia Hamilton created Jada Pinkett Smith's look for the 2011 Grammy Awards.

To achieve this look, Marcia began by using White Sands Vegan Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. She gently towel dried the hair and then sprayed on The Fix from White Sands from roots to ends.

Next, she sectioned the hair vertically from the center of the forehead to the nape. Each section was cornrowed straight back again from the forehead to the nape. The hair was allowed to dry thoroughly using the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Blow Dryer.

When the hair was completely dry, Marcia applied IT&LY Pure Water Drops to her hands and then gently undid the cornrows.

When all the hair was loose, Marcia had Jada flip her head down and over for dramatic volume. To finish, she added additional Pure Water Drops to her hands and fingers combing hair into place.

Style Tip: Can't cornrow? Plait hair instead!

Loose Waves - A simple yet on-trend look!
1. On dry hair, use a flexible hold hairspray like blowPro Serious Non Stick Hairspray

2. Take 1 inch sections of your hair and use a 1 1/4 inch size curling iron (or an 1 inch
iron for tighter waves) and wrap the hair around the barrel, alternately curling sections
clockwise and counter-clockwise.
3. Once your locks are curled completely, spray hair with more hairspray and run your
fingers through your hair to loosen up the waves.
4. **If you want to incorporate the waves into a loose, pulled-back look, simply take a piece
of hair on each side of your part and secure the two pieces together at the back of the
head at the crown with a small hair clip. And remember, for this look, keeping hair a little
messy is key!

Ballerina Bun - Give this classic look a modern spin!
1. Add texture to your hair before putting it up, which will make hair look fuller. Curl hair
with a medium barrel curling iron and spray it with blowPro Beach Blow.
2. Brush hair into a high ponytail and secure with a bungee band. Next, twist remaining
hair into a bun, securing with a small bobby pin.
3. Smooth a serum onto the sides of your hair for added shine - the extra sheen will make
hair glimmer in your pictures!

Faux Bob - Change your look completely without any commitment!
1. Curl your entire head using a medium sized barrel curling iron, spraying each section
before curling with blowPro Serious Non Stick Hairspray to keep the curls locked in
place.
2. Tease the hair at the nape of your neck, as you will use this as a base to pin hair onto.
3. Grab back and side sections of hair and tuck under the back, loosely pinning hair to
create a bob shape.
4. Leave a few locks of hair loose in the front and on top of your head for a more natural
looking bob.
5. **For a more retro spin, place a glamorous rhinestone hairclip on the side of your bob!

Perfect the Ballerina Bun

Celebrity Hairstylist Kevin Mancuso, who has worked with A-listers like Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts and Taylor Swift, offers his tips for achieving the perfect, ballerina bun:

“Natalie’s look in the movie is starkly dramatic, and, while gorgeous on screen, may be too severe in real life.” said Mancuso. “Make the ballerina bun your own by playing with different heights and varying degrees of tightness until you find the look that is most flattering.”

PREP:
· This style works best on second-day hair. The natural oils from your scalp act as a natural smoothing agent and help this sleek style stay in place. So skip the shampoo today.
· Slightly dampen hair and run a dime-size amount of Nexxus Sleek Finish Frizz Taming Silkening Lotion to lock-out frizz and flyaways.

STYLE:
· Brush hair neatly back off your face and secure in a high ponytail right where you want the bun to be.
· Comb through the ponytail to eliminate any frizz and then twist the tail portion into a tight rope and wrap around the ponytail base.
· Tuck ends in and use bobby pins to secure.

FINISH:
· Lightly spray the bun and surrounding hair with a strong hold hairspray like Nexxus Maxximum Super Hold Styling & Finishing Mist.

Get Victoria's Secret Hair

Everyone loves a Victoria's Secret model, they always look flawless and their hair looks amazing. Thanks to Sally Hershberger Downtown stylist Rebekah Forecast, who works with the Victoria’s Secret models on their photo shoots, follow these easy tricks and tips to get irresistable, voluminous locks for a night out:

Morning Preparation:

1. In the morning, shampoo and condition your hair using a quality product to fit your hair type.
2. Either rough blow dry or let your hair air dry, depending on hair’s natural movement.
3. Flip your head over and secure hair high on head.
4. Twist hair around to create a top knot and secure with large open pins. This will create extra volume for your hair during the day.

Styling:

1. At the end of the day, take your hair down out of the top knot and shake out.
2. Apply a firm volumiser, focusing on the roots only. I love using Sally Hershberger Supreme Lift.
3. Rough blow dry the hair with your head flipped over to create maximum root lift.
4. Apply a dry shampoo through out the whole head. I recommend Orlando Pita Refresh Dry Shampoo.
5. Separate hair into 4 sections (2 front and 2 back) and begin curling hair, one section at a time. With a large 1 1/2" curling iron, make sure that the barrel of the iron is at a vertical angle to the head and curl the hair away from your face. Start from the root, positioning the iron a safe distance from your head, and twirl the hair around the iron. Leave the ends out of the iron for a natural, modern look!
6. Once you have curled each section, gently run your fingertips through curls and finish with hairspray.

BONUS: Rebekah always uses extra hair to create the models’ bombshell looks on every photo shoot. Grab some clip in extensions from a local wig shop and take them to your stylist so they can cut/color them to match your hair. Opt for human hair extensions – this way, you can style as normal and curl/flat iron without them melting!

Protective Style: Yacht Knot

Spring 2011 runways had some beautiful hair styles, but the Yacht Knot seen at the S/S 2011 Luca Luca show was to die for! It has the potential to be my favorite protective style, it's that beautiful. Perfect for every single occasion ranging from a night with the boys at the sports bar to a magicial wedding, hell it could even be the brides hairstyle. We have Celebrity stylist, Teddy Charles, to thank for this beautiful down do. I've got the deets on how to recreate the look at home. Teddy used the new Remington T-Studio Pearl Ceramic styling line to create the nautical-inspired “Yacht Knot” hair look that accompanied the breezy, ethereal runway collection for Luca Luca S/S 2011.

Rock the Look:
· Part hair down the middle
· Lightly crimp the roots and add curls throughout with the new Remington T-Studio Pearl Ceramic Styling Wand (luckily most of us have amazing natural texture so we can skip this step, instead allow your hair to air dry for the most texture)
· Brush out the curls to create a wavy texture
· Section off the top and bottom and twist both top sections back into a knotted bun
· Wrap the remaining bottom section around the bun
· Pull out a few wispy pieces at the hairline for a touch of romance, spray with a little hairspray and cruise the catwalk!

The Undone Bun

The undone bun was spotted all over the catwalks of fashion week and tons of celebs love rocking the look. Celebrity hair stylist, Larry Sims gives the inside scoop on how to achieve his favorite runway style, a fun, flirty, undone bun!

“Whether it’s high on your head or low at the back of your neck, this smashing style can go from the runway to your work place. Watch Willow Smith Whip Her Hair

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Willow Smith have become quite possibly my favorite mother-daughter duo right now. At first, I must say I was a bit taken back by Willow's extreme hairstyle but it's grown on me and I love that funky little girl, she's so cute! Those who bad mouth her claiming she's a Rihanna clone should be ashamed of themselves, because that's what little girls do. I did it as a little girl and I'm sure you did it too, you pick a celebrity or some other famous figure and you want to dress like them. Remember all the TLC inspired trends of the 90's? Okay then!

This summer Celebrity Hairstylist Marcia Hamilton traveled the world keeping the Smith Family Red Carpet ready for the Karate Kid Press Tour. Together, they traveled to 8 cities with premieres spanning over a few months. Marcia was responsible for creating various looks for both Jada Pinkett-Smith and her daughter Willow. This Mother-Daughter duo made fashion statements and fans buzzing about their looks. This includes Jada's new "Euro Bang" and Willow's controversial "Rock Star" Mohawk.

Westwood Premiere

Willow's leopard attire as well as her rock star persona created the inspiration behind her red carpet look. We decided the best way to compliment her fashion statement was to create a Mohawk in its natural texture that would be fierce and totally on the edge. To give it the delicate sweetheart flair, I pulled the hair off her face and pinned it back into a soft roll. For hold I used J Beverly Hills, Hold Me Spray and Purity Design's Pure Modelling Wax to maintain the spikes in the back.

London Premiere

This look was total "Camden Town Girl," explains Marcia. "After blowing her hair straight, I flat ironed it with a bit of Purity Design's Pure Definition Hair Spray for hold and shine. For the textured look on the ends, I pinched the hair with a wax."

Berlin Premiere

At the Berline premiere Willow Smith kept everything sleek. Marcia explains, "I blow dried their hair with a round brush for more body and volume at the root. Next, I used a flat iron on Willow to add a slight bump to the ends to softly frame her face. Since Jada wore a really fun golden mini dress for this premiere, I kept the hair really sleek from bangs to ends and swept off the shoulders."

Paris Premiere
Willow's look was haute couture! Marica tells us, "I went a bit high fashion and sleeked her Mohawk back into a very Linda Evangelista look."

Tokyo Premiere

Tokyo was probably the most "fun" look, aside from my personal favorite the Leopard Look. "This was my time to have some fun so Willow and I agreed to play with some temporary color. I used my flat iron and a little White Sands Infinity Hair Spray to flip her hair out, showing more layers. For color, I sprayed the ends of the hair with Temporary Highlight Spray Color in Neon Purple, it was just sheer fabulosity!"

Madrid

Marcia tells us, "the above 90 degree temperatures and humidity are no hairstyles' best friend so I created these looks to withstand the heat for this premiere... We opted for a cool off the face look by braiding three mini cornrows in the front of her head and securing them with hot pink pony tail holders, leaving the rest of her hair out and smooth."

Fall wedding season has officially arrived! Whether you are the bride, bridesmaid, or just going to be a guest at the wedding, take a cue from some of this summer's prettiest bridal 'dos. Inspired by some of our favorite Hollywood starlets who have tied the knot this year, Latrice Strader, Master Hairstylist and Owner of Destiny De’Ve Hair Salon in Washington, D.C. explores the bridal styles of five celebrity newlyweds who mastered their wedding day hairstyles.

Chelsea Clinton tied the knot in a beautiful dress and ceremony, in addition to a classic feminine French twist. “The twists and braids are perfect for Chelsea since she is young, vibrant, and is a part of American royalty” says Latrice. “For any bride desiring a classic look with a lot of volume and texture, this French twist is a top bridal hairstyle—perfect for any princess fairytale wedding” Latrice continues.

Transformers star Megan Fox shows off her shiny jet-black hair on her big day by keeping it straight and simple for her wedding. “Straight hair is definitely a sexy way to highlight natural beauty,” says Latrice. “For any bride who desires a sexier and more natural look, straight hair is the perfect hairstyle” Latrice continues.

Khloe Kardashian’s perfectly crimped locks are highlighted by her luscious golden highlights for her big day. Khloe’s gold streaks bring out her glowing fair skin as well. “Gold and/or deep brown highlights are a great way to highlight your natural skin tone if you have naturally dark hair,” says Latrice. “Shades of lighter colors for those with naturally lighter hair can also bring out beautiful glowing skin as well.”

Carrie Underwood’s beautiful smile and voice aren’t the only things touching hearts all around the nation. Celebrity Hair Watch: Willow Smith

I usually don't even chat about kid's hair too much here on The Anti Hair Slave, but Willow Smith's whole entire look has completely grown on me.  She's a spunky little replica of mama Jada Pinkett Smith and her recent looks on the red carpet's have caught my eye.  There's no doubt this girly loves fashion and isn't about to shy away from any trends! 



I'm sure a hand few of little girls are going to be dying to have hair like Willow's for back to school this year.  But Mom's you don't have to shave the sides to achieve this look.  Instead cornrow the sides back or up into the mohawk look.

Rock the Look: Monica at the 2010 BET Awards

While I don't usually tune into anything on BET, I always like to see what the stars looked like at any awards show and this was no different.  Monica's short do was on point thanks to Motion’s Celebrity Hairstylist, Ursula Stephen. 

Step 1: Relax the sides and back of hair with Motions Silkening Shine Relaxer System to give hair the foundation for great style. This is the first at-home relaxer kit that reduces breakage by up to 85% and moisturizes in each step.

Braid-Out How To

A Braid-Out is a great way to wear your hair when you are looking to minimize the use of heat or want to change up your texture.  I'll show you how I do my quick braid-outs using pictures.  

 

1. Start with freshly co-washed hair and make three large braids on each side of your head. 

2.  I use a cold rod roller to create curl at the end of each braid

3.  Allow hair to dry thoroughly, I usually do this overnight while sleeping.

4. Take out braids, but don't detangle yet.

5. Grab each large piece and detangle carefully using fingers only. Repeat until you achieve your desired look. 

Typically, I don't wear my Braid-outs totally loose.  I usually throw on a headband and clip the ends up.
