Bridal Hair Trend: Classic Ponytail

Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli is the go to man for Bridal Hair Trends!  This season alone he styled the bridal hair for Amsale, Christos and Kenneth Pool shows.  Because the gowns for the upcoming season are lavish and detailed (when aren't wedding gowns lavish and detailed?), Giovanni Giuntoli focused on a soft, feminine approach to the hair.

The look at Amsale was was inspired by a soft approach: “The hair at Amsale had a soft but elegant approach to the classic ponytail,” said Giuntoli.  To create, he prepped with Redken touch control 05 volumizing texture whip on dry hair and then mistedspray starch 15 versatile ironing spray all over while hair was down. Then he created a strong center part and curled mid-shaft to ends with a curling iron, rolling the curls away from the face to create movement. He clipped while curls were cooling and then use a wide toothed comb to loosen the curls and create a bit of texture. Then, hair was gathered into a ponytail and a small section of hair was wrapped around the elastic and secured underneath the ponytail.

The end result was a very beautiful, yet simple ponytail that is anything but plain.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Mackage

Avon’s Global Stylist Advisor Tippi Shorter created the hair look for the Mackage fall 2010 runway show, supported by a full team of Avon stylists.

"This look was really inspired by the woman who had her hair perfectly done the night before, wakes up and tries to recreate the look. It's a look that I refer to as 'second day chic.' It's a sexy and mysterious look that works perfectly with the designs," says Tippi Shorter.

Glam Model: Selita Ebanks

Ever wonder how models keep their natural hair healthy?  All that styling, flat irons, curling irons, tiny toothed combs, rough brushes, and everything else their hair goes on a pretty regular basis... it's a wonder they have any 'real' hair left at all.  Selita Ebanks was spotted at the Rebecca Taylor fashion show after party during fashion week rocking a simple style with very healthy looking hair.

Selita Ebanks uses Bioluste's Intense 4-step Repair System to restore healthy shine to her hair and prepare for styling.

Rock the Look:

Hair - BiolustrĂ© celebrity stylist Ricardo Rojas created her style for Rachel Roy’s Fall 2010 Presentation by blowing the hair dry with a round brush to accentuate her natural waves and add volume. Because the BiolustrĂ© treatment evens the texture of hair from root to end, Ricardo did not use any other styling products. Finally, to hold the look for the entire evening, finish with Acanthe Curl Enhancing Leave-In Fluid to set the waves for a flawless look.

Of the looks Thomas says, “we went with a beachy, tousled look with lots of windblown volume and texture to fit the free-spirited nature of the collection.”

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Zero + Marie Cornejo

Thomas Dunkin (for Sebastian Professional) created the look for the Zero + Marie Cornejo Fall ’10 fashion show. The look was an “effortless-chic” look that’s sexy without trying too hard to compliment Maria Cornejo's inspiration for the collection.

“For both the men’s and women’s collections, I was exploring the structure of perfectly crafted tailoring, but I wanted to remake the rules and push things off balance. In my life there is always a collision of cultures born of my experiences growing up in England yet staying emotionally rooted in the freedom and warmth of Latin America.” – Maria Cornejo
Rock the Look:
1. First apply a lightweight styling spray like Sebastian Professional Potion 9 Lite to damp hair for moveable body and shine

2.  Twist hair into loose sections while blow-drying the length of the hair and gently tousle with finger tips

3.  Rub a quarter-sized amount of Matte Putty between palms and run hands through ends for added piecey-ness and a textured effect

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Christian Siriano

Antoinette Beenders, Aveda lead stylist, created a 1960’s Parisian glamour “wave” updo using Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray at the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week show in New York.

“The Christian Siriano hair look for this season is a Parisian chic updo—a surge of 1960’s glamour.” —Antoinette Beenders for Aveda
Rock the Look:
1. Prep hair with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for light, workable hold.

4. Gather the left side of hair and pull tightly to the back of the head. Pin in place vertically, up the center line of the head, with bobby pins. Smooth hair against the head with fingers and spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray to minimize flyaways.
5. Gather the right side of hair and pull tightly to the back of the head. Wrap hair inwards around your fingers to create a tornado-like twist. Pin in place and spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.
6. Remove pins from the remaining front section of hair and backcomb to create volume. Spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray. Comb hair away from the face and pin to the top of the twist, creating wave-like volume at the crown of the head. Set the look with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Jason Wu

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a soft, romantic “flat chignon” at the Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week show in New York. “The Jason Wu hair look for this season is all about charm—this is a look of romance and innocence. I took inspiration from Holly Hunter in the film, "The Piano.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Rock the Look:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener for added shine and straightness, and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush.

2. Use a comb to create a clean part—either in the center or wherever hair parts naturally. Then pull hair into a loose ponytail at the nape of the neck, allowing hair on either side of the ponytail to cover the ears and rest at chin length. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for all-day strong hold.
3. Wrap a 10-inch bungee elastic around the ponytail, criss-crossing it from top to bottom to create a braid-like pattern. Tie securely at the bottom and set with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.
4. Wrap the braided ponytail into a flat chignon at the back of the head and secure with hair pins.
5. Allow a few loose pieces of hair to fall naturally around the face. The sides should be loose and romantic while the chignon is more tightly secured in place. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for lightweight hold.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Band of Outsiders

Thomas Dunkin of Sebastian Professional was backstage at the Fall 2010 presentation for Band of Outsiders creating low-slung ponytails that subtly nod to ‘70s style without losing themselves to the past.
Rock the Look:

1. Apply Sebastian Professional Texturizer throughout damp hair.

2. Blow-dry hair using only your hands to create unkempt, natural texture and a sporty flair.

3. When the hair is nearly dry, spritz Volupt Spray for added texture and then dry hair completely. For extreme texture add another dose of Volupt Spray to hair and blow dry again.

4. Finally, part hair down the middle and fasten it back with a tie just below the eyes. Create height to the crown by lightly pushing and pulling the hair forward, away from the tie. To add definition or tame fly-aways, apply a small amount of Matte Putty to fingers and style as desired.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Betsey Johnson

Sebastian Professional lead stylist Thomas Dunkin was backstage at Betsey Johnson to create a windblown, cowgirl look that’s playful and sexy to match the Betsey Johnson's Fall 2010 beauty look inspired by the sexy, superstar actresses in the cowgirl "French" western film, Las Petroleras (1971).  Betsey's own gang of bad girls channel Brigitte Bardot's lust for adventure, exhibiting unassuming sexiness that's as captivating as it is liberating.

Rock the Look:

1. Generously spray Sebastian Professional Volupt Spray throughout damp hair for workable volume and texture.
2. Blow dry hair and set it with medium and large-sized Velcro rollers for height and body.
3. Once the hair has cooled, remove the rollers and lightly cover hair with Shaper Zero Gravity to create added texture and separation.
4. Create authentic cowgirl flair by separating hair into two loose, tousled pigtails and decorate them with torn fabric or thin leather ties. Finish with Re-Shaper.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: DKNY

The fall ’10 DKNY collection encapsulates NY art and soul, reflecting the convergence of creative worlds and individual style that is the spirit of New York City. The graphic, modern, and unique style resonates throughout the collection, including silhouettes as tall and lean as the skyline.

To match this Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director for Wella Professionals and Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals designed a refined side-swept ponytail projects a sexy equestrian vibe with a subtly strong, yet not too masculine look. The ponytail’s length falls over the shoulder on the side where hair is parted, while just a few face framing layers are left to brush along on the opposite side of the face. The effortless elegance of this asymmetric look complements the proportions of any face because it offsets any imbalance of the facial structure.

Rock The Look:
1. Prepare damp hair with System Professional Volumagic and blow dry with a large round brush, creating a soft wave and giving direction for the side part.

2. Rake hands through hair to loosen the waves, pulling to the side of the part and fasten the low side ponytail.

3. Leave hair on the opposite side of the ponytail loose around the face to balance the asymmetry of the look.

4. Lightly smooth System Professional Hypercurl on the length of the ponytail for separation and added texture.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Cynthia Rowley

Wella Professionals lead colorist Eva Scrivo directed a team of Wella stylists to create custom color extensions that replicate the rich, artificial jewel tones of the collection, such as emerald, amethyst, lapis, bright turquoise, and navy for the Cynthia Rowley Fall/Winter 2010 runway show.

Cynthia Rowley is known for her whimsical-yet-sophisticated aesthetic with a vintage-inspired slant. For Fall 2010, the collection feels more indie and tough, not ladylike.  To compliment that look, the hair is a tangible interpretation of nouveau fun, marrying the funky hair accessory with wearable street style. A natural, textured ponytail is accented with the striking contrast of artificial colored hair extensions blended seamlessly within the ponytail for a modern twist.

Rock The Look:
1. Section hair off and working from back of the head to the front, prepare hair with System Professional Ultimation hair spray for added texture and shine.
2. Create texture within each section by using a combination of a curling iron and crimping iron for non-uniform waviness.
3. Place Wella colored hair pieces that have been crimped within sections of the natural hair so that the extensions blend in seamlessly.
4. Pull the hair back into a soft ponytail at the nape of the neck with the ends flowing naturally, while allowing the streaks of color to show through for added dimension.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: BCBG

John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh was backstage at the BCBG Fall/Winter 2010 show to create a sleek hairstyle. “The collection had a clean, modern feel,” says Harry. “I wanted to complement that aesthetic with a very comfortable and effortlessly chic look."
Rock the Look:

1. Harry began by applying John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Take Charge Mousse to dry hair and blow drying, using his fingers instead of a brush to separate the hair from the root and create texture. The technique was crucial to recreating the “pulled back” look any girl would get while styling her own hair.
2. Once the hair was secured in a low pony, Harry added a small amount of John Frieda’s new Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion to the ends of the hair to ensure the tips were healthy looking and defined. He then wrapped the pony into a twisted bun, leaving the tips of the hair sticking out in a fan-like “fringe.”

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Hair: Organic by John Patrick

Aveda was on hand backstage ORGANIC by John Patrick Fall/Winter 2010 Show with Odile Gilbert to create a modern twist on the Brigitte Bardot “pouf”.

“Our collection this season is centered around big, beautiful hair that makes our hand-woven tweeds look happy." Think the look might look old fashioned? Here's what John had to say, "despite some inspiration from Joni Mitchell, Lady Diana, and Brigitte Bardot, the hair look is modern—very young and fun, not polished or structured.”
— John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

Rock the Look:

1. Brush through hair and prep with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add body and shine. Use a comb to create a left side part.

2. Divide hair into four sections: sides, back, and top. Fold the top section over the face and clip back to separate.

3. Backcomb the back section of hair with a brush to create messy volume. Spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for maximum hold.

4. Create an anchor by crossing bobby pins horizontally across the middle of the back section of hair, just below the crown of the head.

5. Using large hair pins, attach a hairdresser's sponge at the crown, where bobby pins are anchored.

6. Cross the right section of backcombed hair over to the left, pinning over the hairdresser's sponge with large hair pins. Repeat with the left section of backcombed hair, bringing it to right. Take all remaining hair in the back section and twirl to the left to create a French twist. Secure the twist at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating a tail of loose hair draped over the shoulder.

7. Set aside a portion of hair to fall in front of the left ear, and brush remaining top section of hair over the hairdresser's sponge, Pin it into the French twist to create a “pouf.” Pull lightly with fingers to create loose, spontaneous volume. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

8. Leave wisps of free falling hair in front of the left ear, and loosely pin remaining pieces above the right ear. Finish with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.
