Lakeville native Molly Whalen was crowned Miss Massachusetts 2011

Lakeville native Molly Whalen was crowned Miss Massachusetts 2011 at the Hanover Theater in Worcester on July 9. The 20-year-old resident of Middleborough held the local pageant title of Miss Taunton. She had competed in the state pageant three years prior, at the age of 17, and took time off from pageants in order to complete her degree in dental hygiene from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Katie Levasseur was crowned Miss Vermont 2011

Road to Miss America 2012


Katie Levasseur, a 20-year old student at University of Vermont and member of Order of Omega Theta Psi Chapter and Alpha Delta Pi, was crowned Miss Vermont 2011 on June 25, 2011 at the South Burlington High School Performing Arts Center. She will represent Vermont in Miss America 2012.



As Miss Vermont, Levasseur receives $7,250 in scholarships, over $12,000 in prizes, and the opportunity to compete for the Miss America title in Las Vegas, Nevada in January 2012. Currently a student at University of Vermont, Levasseur is majoring in Political Science and hopes to pursue a career as a Public Policy Analyst.



Susan J. Lackey, president of the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization, commented on the new Miss Vermont. “Katie embodies the qualities a role model for young women and girls should have,” said Lackey. “She’s talented, ambitious and accomplished. We are excited about working with her this year.”

Danica Olsen was crowned Miss Utah 2011

Danica Olsen, a Utah Valley University student, was crowned Miss Utah 2011 on June 25, 2011 at Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City. She will represent Utah in the Miss America 2012 Pageant. Miss UT 2011 talent in the pageant was Dance and her pageant platform is “Prescription Drug Addiction Awareness.”

Anna Simpson was crowned Miss South Dakota 2011

Anna Simpson, Miss Rapid City, was crowned the 65th Miss South Dakota Saturday night, June 25, 2011 in Hot Springs. Simpson will represent South Dakota in the Miss America pageant. Simpson won the preliminary talent competition Friday playing “Malaguena” on the piano – a day after she won the swimsuit competition.
That’s not terribly uncommon, pageant producer Ray Peterson said. But Simpson – Miss Rolling Plains – wasn’t the only contestant to score a double win this week.

Calista Kirby of Brookings won the Thursday night talent competition and the Friday night swimsuit contest, creating what Peterson called a “double-double.”

Hailey Best was crowned Miss North Carolina 2011

Hailey Best, a Meredith College student and Miss Durham Hailey Best, was crowned Miss North Carolina at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh on June 25, 2011. 20-year-old Best, of Goldsboro, succeeds 2010 Miss North Carolina Adrienne Core. Best will represent North Carolina in the Miss America pageant in January in Las Vegas. Maria Beale Fletcher, the only Miss North Carolina later to be crowned Miss America, was to be honored on the 50th anniversary of her title.

Carlie Colella of Hagerstown was crowned Miss Maryland 2011

Road to Miss America 2012



Carlie Colella of Hagerstown was crowned Miss Maryland 2011 Saturday night, June 25, 2011 in her hometown. She will represent Maryland at the Miss America 2012 pageant, next January in Las Vegas. She ran on the platform, “Empowerment of Women: Creating an Equal Opportunity for Success.” Her talent is contemporary dance.

Carlie was crowned by outgoing Miss Maryland 2010 Lindsay Staniszewski, who had spent her year as Miss Maryland promoting the platform, “Beyond Beauty: Building Self-Esteem and Positive Body Image in Girls.”

According to the Beyond Beauty for Girls website, the groups advaces “an advocacy platform dedicated to building self-esteem and inspiring confidence in girls.”

Among its partners is the Girl Scouts of America.

Lindsay was a Quality of Life finalist at the Miss America 2011 pageant.

Carlie hopes to become the first Maryland contestant to wear the Miss America crown.

Carlie is well known in parts of Maryland for her athletic ability.

She is strong in soccer, and track and field.

Alana Lee crowned Miss Nevada 2011

Alana Lee, the 21-year-old broadcast journalism major at Dixie State College was ecstatic, crowned Miss Nevada 2011. She will represent Nevada in Miss America 2012 at Planet Hollywood on Jan. 14.



Lee bested 13 other contestants in the Miss Nevada Scholarship Pageant presented Friday and Saturday nights in the packed CasaBlanca Resort Showroom. Her platform was “improving relations through effective communication” and her talent was singing. She also earned the $1,000 Academic Award scholarship.

Diana Dreman was crowned Miss Colorado 2011

Diana Dreman was crowned Miss Colorado 2011 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver. Diana is a student of University of Colorado at Boulder. She is 23-year-old and will represent Colorado in Miss America 2012. Her talent presentation was a Musical Theater Dance and her platform iss the American Cancer Society.

Diana Dreman’s mother, Rebecca King Dreman, was crowned Miss Colorado 1973 and went on to win Miss America in 1974.

The first runner up was Miss High Mile Hannah Porter; second runner up was Miss Littleton Stacy Cook; third runner up was Miss Thornton Janelle Orsborn; and fourth runner up was Miss Rocky Mountain Morgan Weaver.

Morgan Amarone was crowned Miss Connecticut 2011

Morgan Amarone was crowned Miss Connecticut 2011/Miss Connecticut Scholarship 2011 at the Garde Arts Center in New London on June 25. Morgan is 23-year-old and will represent Connecticut in Miss America 2012.
“I’m still in shock,” said Hamden’s Morgan Amarone, just minutes after being named Miss Connecticut 2011.



The first runner-up is Jessica Lesage of Wallingford.

Hope Anderson was crowned Miss Louisiana 2011 on June 25 at the 48th annual Miss Louisiana pageant at the W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre in Monroe. She will represent Louisiana in Miss America 2012 Pageant.

Anderson, a Monroe resident, is a December graduate of ULM. Anderson was also awarded Preliminary Fitness and Evening Gown awards during this year’s pageant, as well as the Academic Award.

Miss South Carolina 2011 will be crowned on July 2, 2011 at Township Auditorium in Columbia. The winner will represent South Carolina in Miss America 2012. It is the 75th anniversary Miss South Carolina and Miss South Carolina Teen pageant and forty-three young women will vie for the title of Miss South Carolina 2011 and 46 for the title of Miss South Carolina Teen 2011.

Elizabeth Wertenberger was crowned Miss Michigan 2011

Elizabeth Wertenberger, Miss Southwest, was crowned Miss Michigan 2011 Saturday night June 17, 2011 after four days of competition Muskegon’s Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts. She will represent Michigan in Miss America 2012. Wertenberger won $10,000 in scholarship money.



Miss West Michigan Kelly Oles was the first runner-up, $5,000; Miss Tip of the Mitt Emily Kieliszewski was the second runner-up, $4,000; Miss Oakland County Elizabeth Hawthorne was the third runner-up, $3,000; and Miss Spirit of the State Mekeisha Alcock was the fourth runner-up, $1,000.

Juliann Sheldon was crowned Miss Pennsylvania 2011 on June 19, 2011. Juliann Sheldon is a Point Park University student. She will represent Pennsylvania in Miss America 2012.
Juliann Sheldon performed Jazzz Dance in the Talent Competition. her pageant platform is “Increasing Overall Awareness of Mental Health.”

Taryn Chute was crowned Miss Montana 2011 on June 18

Road to Miss America 2012



Taryn Chute was crowned Miss Montana 2011 on June 18, 2011 in the Dawson County High School auditorium. She will represent Montana in Miss America 2012 Pageant. Her platform is Educate and Motivate: Preventing Childhood Obesity. Taryn wins a $5000 cash scholarship plus $11,500 in applied scholarships, and many prizes including a Silver Service tea set. Taryn tore her ACL in college track and has had a year and a half of rehab so it’s amazing for her to win the talent competition with her lyrical dance.

First runner-up was Veronika Ohlinger of Cooke City singing Black Velvet. She wins $2500. She also won the Spirit and Leadership Award given by the production staff.

Chantell Bury, 20, Glendive was second runner-up, winning $2000 in cash scholarship. She was voted Miss Congeniality by fellow contestants and voted most photogenic by Right Impressions, the official photographer for the week. Chantell also won the Miss America State Community Service Award of $1000.

Third runner-up Gillette Vaira, 24, of Lambert was Thursday night’s evening gown winner, and received the Miss America $1000 Scholar Academic Award and the interview award.

Cortney Bury, 19, of Glendive was fourth runner-up and winner of the Friday night fitness in swimwear competition and Miracle Maker fundraising award from the Children’s Miracle Network.

Jennifer Sedler was crowned Miss Arizona 2011 Saturday night at Mesquite High School in Gilber. She will represent Arizona in Miss America 2012 pageant. The first runner-up was Rebecca Hasulak. The second runner-up was Kyra Batté. The third runner-up was Tiffany Hilburn and the fourth runner-up was Melody Knudson.
Jennifer Sedler’s platform was, “Making a Difference in the Lives of Children with Life Threatening Illnesses: Support For HopeKids.” She performed jazz dance in Talent Competition.

Julia Furtado was crowned Miss Maine 2011 Saturday night, June 17, 2011 in Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School. she will represent Maine in Miss America 2012 pageant.
Julia was also awarded the victory in the talent competition as a vocalist.

According to the Miss Maine Scholarship Program, Julia resides in Dayton and is a sophomore at the University of New England. “Miss Maine receives thousands of dollars in college scholarships, as well as a paid trip to compete for the title of Miss America,” the pageant said. “ Each contestant, regardless of placement, earns valuable college assistance.

“As a not-for-profit organization, whose primary responsibilities are to raise and award scholarships, the Miss Maine Scholarship Program also provides the young women of Maine opportunities for growth and achievement.”

Erin Hatley was crowned Miss Tennessee 2011

20 year old Erin Hatley, Miss Collierville, was crowned Miss Tennessee 2011 Saturday night, June 18, 2011 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. She will represent Tennessee at the Miss America 2012 pageant.



Erin studied Hospitality and Resort Management at the University of Memphis. Madison Snipes was crowned Miss Tennessee Outstanding Teen. Madison, 15, hopes to be an entertainer, according to her Facebook page.

Natalie Davis was crowned Miss Minnesota 2011

Natalie Davis, Miss Mankato, was crowned Miss Minnesota 2011 on Saturday night, June 18, 2011. She will represent Minnesota at the Miss America 2012 pageant in Las Vegas.



Natalie is a 20-year old student at St. Olaf College, majoring in chemistry with concentrations in education and biomedical studies. She plans to become a pediatrician.

“It is crucial that the growing incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders be addressed,” she wrote on the website. “Over 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of Autism; this does not include the number of family members, school systems and work places that are also impacted by the disorder.”

Michaela Grace Lackey Crowned Miss Georgia 2011

Michaela Grace Lackey, Miss Heart of Lakes, was crowned Miss Georgia 2011 on Saturday night, June 18, 2011. She won a $15,000 scholarship and will represent Georgia in the Miss America 2011 Pageant in Las Vegas next year. The 21-year-old dancer from East Cobb is a senior at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. She earned her way into the Miss Georgia Pageant by winning the Miss Heart of Lakes title in Rabun County in October.



She is the first Georgia’s Outstanding Teen to become Miss Georgia, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported. She won Miss Georgia on her second try, just as she won the teen title on her second try.
Dance also is at the core of her platform, PASSION: Performing Artists Serving Society in Our Neighborhoods.
“Through my dancing, I have been able to expose the community to the performing arts by taking the performance to the people,” Lackey wrote on the PASSION Facebook page. “Dance is my passion, but I LOVE collaborating with other art fields to combine all different types of art together.” She said she has raised more than $38,000 for charities through dance.
Lackey was the first runner-up at the Miss Cobb County Pageant in August. The winner of that title, Brianna Jewett of Marietta, was fourth runner-up Saturday night in Columbus.

Laura Kaeppelar was crowned Miss Wisconsin 2011

Road to Miss America 2012

Laura Kaeppelar, Miss Southern Wisconsin, was crowned Miss Wisconsin 2011 at Alberta Kimball Auditorium on Saturday night, June 18, 2011. Laura Kaeppelar won a $10,000 college scholarship and will represent Wisconsin in the Miss America 2012 Pageant.

Kaeppelar was second runner-up last year competing as Miss Kenosha. Kaeppeler has a bachelor’s degree in music from Carthage College. She sang a classical aria in the talent competition. Her platform was mentoring children whose parents are in jail.



Miss Seven Rivers, Raenna Johnson of Holmen, was the first runner-up. She wins a $2,000 scholarship.
Miss Fox River Valley, Desiree Geffers of Oshkosh, was second runner-up and won a $1,000 scholarship.
Miss Madison Capital City, Brittany Lee Wittnabel of Beloit, was third runner-up and won an $800 scholarship.
Miss La Crosse Oktoberfest, Elizabeth Kramer of Holmen, was fourth runner-up and won a $600 scholarship.
