Beauty Read: Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm

Here is the thing, while we love doing our own product testing and providing you guys with reviews, we were not the chemistry wiz like the writers over at The Beauty Brains. If you really want to know why a certain products works and get behind the marketing ploys by learning how exactly the ingredients work then you should really check their site out or buy their new book, Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm?: Top Cosmetic Scientists Answer Your Questions about the Lotions, Potions and Other Beauty Products You Use Every Day

As soon as I started reading the book, I was hooked! That's probably because they start right out with hair care dispelling myths and even bashing some super popular brands. When I say "bashing" I really mean breaking down their marketing tricks and giving the real deal to consumers. The book is in a really simple and easy to read format that allows you to skip around, read things you want to know about, and skip others to read for another time. It's great! I highly recommend you check it out before you buy another cosmetic item.

Ayurvedic Skin Care

I've written a lot in the past about Ayurvedic hair care, but lately I haven't really been using too much of the shikakai and alma combination. Instead, I've been turning to henna for stronger hair. However, now I've been alerted to a skin care line that is based in Ayurvedic practices. The line is called Pratima and on the website there is a quick quiz that you can take that reveals your Dosha.

What's a Dosha?
Within the Ayurvedic practice your dosha is mind and body type. Pratima uses your dosha to determine which of their products would be best for you, based on your dosha. Overall, there are three different dosha's that you can fall within: Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha.

Now I haven't tried any of the products, so I can't say whether or not they are any good but it's interesting. Pratima has a full line of skin, body, and hair care products. Visit their site to check it out.

9 HABITS TO BE BEAUTIFUL

1. Get an Early Start
Make a habit of washing your face a few hours before bed. If you wait until you're tired, you're more likely to blow it off -- allowing "toxins and dirt to stay on there all night," says dermatologist Laurie Polis of N.Y.C. Another consequence? You miss the best time to treat your skin. "At night there's more blood flow to the skin's surface, and there's nothing else on your face to interfere with absorption," Polis says.

2. Sleep on Your Back
Note to Audrey Hepburn fans: Lying on your stomach is bad for "beauty sleep." The average head weighs 7 to 8 pounds -- a lot of pressure to be putting on your face every night. In fact, many dermatologists say they can tell what side of the face people sleep on by the number of wrinkles there.

3. Get a Lift
Sleep with your head elevated on two pillows, or put the headrest area of your bed on 2- to 4-inch pieces of wood. Gravity helps lymph and blood flow so fluid won't accumulate, Polis says.

At night you don't need to worry about eye treatments smearing your makeup, so slather on the richest formula you can. Polis swears by Aquaphor: "It conditions lashes and hydrates the delicate eye skin really well."

4. Sneak a Glow
Mix a drop of self-tanner into your night cream or use a cream that contains a bit of tan-producing DHA.

5. Avoid Carb Face
To wake with defined cheekbones, eat a high-protein, low-sugar dinner (try salmon and asparagus, a natural diuretic). Skip the rice, pasta and potatoes. "When our diet's high in glycemic carbohydrates, our features take on a soft, doughy appearance," says Connecticut dermatologist Nicholas Perricone.

6. Wrap It Up
To minimize A.M. frizz, sleep on a satin pillowcase or put your hair in a silk scarf. "Those fabrics are much softer than cotton, so there's less friction," says Harry Josh, a John Frieda stylist.

7. Find Your Inner Ballerina
Pile hair into a twist on the top of your head (use a scrunchie to avoid crimping). "In the morning you'll have major volume and beautiful waves," Josh says.

8. Turn on the Hair Conditioning
Sleep with a moisturizing treatment in damp hair overnight. We like Philip B. Katira Hair Masque, but any rich conditioner will do. Rinse in the morning.

9. Pop a Rooster Pill
Trust us, we were skeptical. But after swallowing two Wake Up on Time pills at 11 P.M., we found it much easier to get out of bed seven hours later. Created by a sleep-deprived single mother, the pills contain an energizing blend of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamins B6 and B12 and guarana-seed extract. It's formulated with a coating that releases ingredients into your bloodstream toward the end of your last sleep cycle, so you wake up feeling clear-headed, not fuzzy.

Rock the Look: Adrienne Bailon in NYC

Actress and singer Adrienne Bailon was spotted shopping in Manhattan looking sun-kissed and carefree. Recreate her beauty glow by using the tips and products below, straight from the hair and makeup pros who created it: Lancôme artist Ewa Szwed and Hair Rules Founder Dickey.

For her makeup, Adrienne wanted a very "J-Lo" inspired look—in other words: glowy, sun-kissed skin. To achieve this, Ewa utilized a warm palette of colors, a few lash flares, and sumptuous lips.

For her hair, Adrienne wanted to achieve an "intentionally undone" look, messy but still sleek, which is a perfect style for a shopping excursion.

Rock the Look:

For her skin the following products were used:
Teint Miracle Foundation
Ageless Minérale Powder
Maquicomplet Concealer in Dore
Tropiques Minérale Bronzer in Natural Copper

Her brows where then shaded in with:
Le Crayon Poudre in Taupe
Color Design Eyeshadow in Filigree (to highlight brow bone)

EYES:
Hypnose Drama in Excessive Black (3 coats)
Individual Lash Flares
Le Crayon Khol in Black Ebony (smudged in upper and lower lash line)
Color Design 5-Pan Shadow & Liner Palettes in Coral Crush & Bronze Amour

CHEEKS:
Blush Subtil in Cappucine (for contouring)
Color Design Eyeshadow in Filigree (to highlight cheek bone)
Blush Subtil in Shimmer Pink Pool

LIPS:
Le Lipstique in Sheer Natural
L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Rich Cashmere
Color Fever Gloss in Flushed Rose

HAIR:
Hair Rules Blow Out Your Waves (pre-heat styling)

Using a cool setting on the blowdryer, Dickey removed 80% of the water from Adrienne's hair. "When you're working with someone like Adrienne, who has beautiful hair but has to change color frequently for various roles, it's important to always remember that the health of the hair is paramount. By gently taking out the water before heat styling, we're doing less damage." Next Dickey used a warm flat iron to smooth hair out to achieve a soft look, but one that still had movement. He finished with a medium barrel curling iron, wrapping small sections at random, to add to the "piecy" and undone look that Adrienne wanted.

Beauty Break: Waxing Tips

Waxing season is coming up! Skyy Hadley shares some tips to get the most from your wax!

Before wax
· Exfoliate the area to be waxed with an exfoliating scrub such as the True Blue Spa Invigorating Spa Scrub
· Make sure hair is at least ¼ inch long before you wax
· I suggest taking an aspirin or drinking a glass of wine an hour before your appointment or at home wax to minimize the pain

During Wax- if you choose to wax at home
· Make sure the area is clean and dry
· Sprinkle some baby powder onto the area to be waxed
· Apply a thin layer of wax in the direction of hair growth
· Pull wax strips off in the opposite direction of hair growth
· Use one hand to pull the wax and use the other to stretch skin to help minimize pain
· Remember to wax small areas at a time
· My favorite at home wax kit is the Bliss Poetic Waxing Kit

After wax
· Apply an aloe lotion or gel onto the treated area to soothe the skin
· If desired, apply an ingrown hair protector gel after waxing the bikini area
· Wear loose cotton pants or a skirt to let the treated area breathe

Myth: Shaving causes hair to grow in thicker and waxing causes hair to grow back lighter. In reality, it really only appears this way because when you shave, hair grows in all at the same time where with waxing the hair grows in at different times.

6 WAYS TO FIGHT AGING

"Botox in an apple?" one skin doctor scoffed, sounding as if he wanted to hang up on me. I'd asked him if any foods or supplements might offer a youthful boost similar to injectable "B." High-tech treatments work wonders; they just make my wallet break out. And I figure if certain diets can help curb heart disease and diabetes, why not the skin? It's the body's largest organ, after all.

The science may not be rock-solid, but tantalizing research does suggest that making a few lifestyle tweaks can help your complexion find its potential. Call it: eat, pray, glow.

1. HAVE AN ORANGE A DAY: Of all the studies on diet and skin, perhaps the best case can be made for increasing foods with vitamin C, according to Jenny Kim MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology and clinical medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, who pored through the scientific literature for Yahoo! with the help of one of her residents, Jamie Zussman, MD. She cites a 2007 study that examined national data from 4025 women and showed that a higher intake of vitamin C was associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkles and aging dryness. The main sources of the vitamin in the study were orange juice, fruit—citrus and other kinds—and tomatoes. You just need two of those oranges, or a cup of the OJ, or four large tomatoes to get more than the recommended daily amount of vitamin C for adult women.

2. EAT FOR COLOR: Most experts, in fact, vote for a potent cocktail of antioxidants. To RealAge doctor, Michael Roizen, MD, coauthor of YOU: Staying Young, that means loading up on all the colorful vegetables and fruits you can manage, plus green tea. "If you avoid saturated and trans fats, added sugars and syrups, and any grain that's not 100 percent whole—foods that age you both inside and out," he says, "you can eat almost anything else." For Neil Sadick MD, clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, it's simpler. "If I had to do two things in my life food-wise to protect my skin," he says, "I would ingest more soy and drink a glass of red wine at night." Once you change your diet, he says, it should take three to six months to notice an improvement.

3. POUR ON THE OLIVE OIL: New York dermatologist Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, whose MD and PhD (in genetics) are both from Harvard, claims the secret of the lustrous Mediterranean skin and hair is olive oil. "It not only provides those antioxidants that prevent toxic damage," she says, "but also the fatty acids that are an integral part of skin, hair, and nails." In her opinion you get the best benefit when you don't cook it. "At home, I put raw olive oil on our poached eggs in the morning, drench our salad at lunch, and at dinner, it goes on top (raw again) of any vegetable or pasta dish."

4. POP A FISH OIL PILL: Journalist Thea Singer, whose book Stress Less: The new science that shows women how to rejuvenate the body and the mind hit the shelves this week, points to a fish oil study that, she says, "really blew me away." Published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it showed that people with the highest levels of fish oil (marine omega-3 fatty acids) in their blood also had the least amount of "telomere shortening," a known marker of aging. Singer explains that telomeres are the tips on the ends of chromosomes that protect the DNA, and when they get too short, the skin cells "go to sleep and start spewing enzymes that chew up collagen and elastin, which ultimately can cause sagging and wrinkling." UCLA's Kim points to other studies suggesting that fish oil may help suppleness and psoriasis. There's no harm in taking a supplement, or in eating more salmon.

5. GO OFF THE CRAZY DIET: Going back to those telomeres, Singer's book describes a convincing body science—some of it Nobel Prize-winning—showing that chronic stress can speed up the rate at which our cells age (skin included) by ten years or more. One activity that causes the body to produce stress hormones, you may not be surprised to learn, is strict dieting. You'll go much easier on yourself with a more moderate method of weight loss.

6. TRY DANCING WITHOUT THE STARS: One of the best ways to turn back the clock, Singer believes, is dancing—with a partner, in a class, or alone in your living room. But if that's not your thing, practicing compassion meditation—or any kind (see more here from a wonderful teacher)—is a great way to unwind. Yoga, massage, joining a support group, and feeling grateful, are also proven means to cultivating radiant calm, both inside and out.

Makeup Brush Cleaning: Beauty Break

If you don't wash your makeup brushes, you are doing your skin a disservice. Dirty makeup brushes can lead to breakouts! I always clean my brushes once a week, it's simple and only takes a few seconds. Every week I spray my brushes with Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner to the point where they are wet and lay them on a clean paper towel to dry. I especially love this one because it's a spray bottle, so it's easy to use and it's antibacterial. Since I don't wear heavy makeup on a daily basis, I really don't need to clean my brushes daily - weekly does the trick.

About every other week I use baby shampoo to thoroughly wash all my brushes. I get warm soapy water and dip the brush head in the water and swirl it around. After I finish that I allow the brushes to dry on a paper towel. Simple and easy. Don't want to wash your makeup brushes? Use your fingers to apply your makeup!

How to be rich

Want to be one of the lucky ones on the road to riches, want to be on the freeway to financial freedom, on your way to wealth?
Here are the top 7 roads to riches, the top 7 easiest and fastest ways to acquire wealth ...

Inherit it
This is how today's old money families got their wealth. In the 1800's and early 1900's, before anti-trust laws, income taxes and political correctness, America's finest families built empires and amassed great wealth; in industries such as oil, banking, newspapers, sugar, transportation, land, bootlegging and even prostitution. And that original wealth was passed down to succeeding generations. The number one easiest and fastest way to acquire wealth is to inherit it.

Unfortunately, inheriting wealth is mainly a matter of blood; you have to be born into the right family.

Marry it
If you can't inherit it the second easiest and fastest way to acquire wealth is to marry someone who is already wealthy. And sometimes that person may even be kind, generous, compatible and loveable. And, if not, divorce can pay off handsomely. Just remember to get married (and divorced) in a state that has favorable community property laws.

Work for it
If you can't inherit wealth and can't marry it then you can work for it. People rarely get rich having a job. Rather, they build a company and own it. And then often take that company public, collecting hundreds of millions, or billions, of dollars in doing so.

Or, they invent something useful and valuable which greatly benefits society, such as explosive devices like dynamite, or the paper clip or the thigh master or eBay.

Win it
If you can't inherit wealth, can't marry it or can't work for it then maybe you can win it. Lotteries abound, paying out multi-million dollar jackpots, and eventually someone always wins them. Unfortunately, you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning then winning the lottery. But, hey, it only costs a buck!

Steal it or deal it
If you can't inherit wealth and you can't marry it, work for it, or win it then maybe you could steal it or deal it.

You could become a CEO or chief financial officer for a big cash-rich company, cook the books, steal millions of dollars, buy a $20 million dollar home, lie to the feds, and hope you don't get caught, convicted and sent to Club Fed. I don't recommend anyone try to get rich this way.
Also not recommended is to deal it; to become a drug lord and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in cash dealing heroin, crack, meth and other non-FDA approved goodies and wholesaling it to pushers who will gladly resell it to anyone to wants it, ranging from children to movie stars. After all, aren't drug dealers just supplying what people want; even if it creates crime, ruins lives, kills people or could put you in jail for the rest of your life. Not a legal (or moral) way to get rich.

Gamble for it
If you can't inherit money, can't marry it, can't work for it, can't win it, can't steal or deal it then maybe you could gamble for it. Over 50 million people play poker. A few even make millions of dollars at it. You've seen them on television, winning or losing upwards of a million dollars on the turn of a card. Looks easy, doesn't it? They don't look so tough on TV; I bet any decent poker player (like me for instance) has a good chance of beating them on a lucky day. So maybe you could simply plunk down $3,000-$25,000 per tournament entry fee, or get a backer, join the World Poker Tour, win a few tournaments and get rich! Or maybe, in reality, the average amateur poker player has a snowball's chance in hell of getting rich that way.

Invest and get rich
If you can't inherit wealth, can't marry it, can't work for it, can't win it, can't steal or deal it or can't gamble for it then maybe you can invest and get rich. There are 2 good ways to invest and get rich; the real estate market and the stock market.
According to historical data, over time, real etate goes up a average of 10% a year. So getting rich in real estate tends to take a long time. And also requires a large down payment. Hard to get rich quick that way.

On the other hand, the stock market can be a good way to get rich. Stocks can go up dramatically over a relatively short period of time and make you rich but you have to have the money to invest and you have to pick the right stocks at the right time.

To recap how to get rich:
1. inherit it
2. marry it
3. work for it
4. win it
5. steal it or deal it
6. gamble for it
7. invest for it

How To Get Flawless Skin

Flawless, glowing skin is something that everyone yearns for. Most of the time, beauty salons are filled with people, who want special treatment for their skin to exude radiance. Even after trying out a number of beauty treatments and tips given by experts, people still find something missing in their skin. It is, perhaps, the glow that is lacking, which comes naturally. Getting good skin is easy, but making it healthy and appear young forever requires great care. To get the extra glow, you need to follow a healthy lifestyle, which is largely possible only with good food and exercises. Check out the healthy tips and know how to get a flawless and glowing skin.

Tips For Healthy And Glowing Skin
  • A healthy diet is prerequisite for a flawless and glowing skin. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices as well. Make the diet balanced by including all the essential nutrients. Choose foods that are low in fat and high in nutritional value. Cut off caffeine, alcohol and aerated drinks from your diet. Avoid junk and fried food.
  • Water hydrates the skin and keeps it free of toxin. It also improves the elasticity of the skin, making it exude its natural glow. Drink at least eight glasses of water everyday. Quench your thirst with water, instead of aerated or sugary drinks.
  • Clean and exfoliate your skin every now and then. Cleanse your skin and make use of a natural scrub to exfoliate it. This process wipes out the accumulated dirt in the pores and removes dead cells of the skin. After exfoliation, do not forget to moisturize your skin.
  • Get your body massaged by essential oil regularly. Oil massage improves blood circulation and makes the body shine naturally. Make use of essential oils. Use separate oils for face and rest of the body. Go for a steam immediately after oil massage and then bathe later on. This process will improve the skin tone as well.
  • Stress is a major cause for skin related problems. This can make the skin look dull and loose it natural glow. Do exercises to banish stress related problems. Yoga is a great stress buster. The stress-free life will reflect on your face!
  • Exercise regularly, to strengthen your bones and muscles. You may exercise your facial muscles as well, to firm them up. Exercise boosts the blood circulation, thereby increasing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to skin to make it glow naturally.
  • An eight-hours sound sleep will help your body to replenish, regenerate and rejuvenate itself. Take rest at the end of the day. Do not skip sound sleep, as a restless mind often affects the overall health.

5 Beauty Tips Every Woman Should Know

Standing tall, feeling confident, believing in yourself -- these are all important ways to feel your best. But as any woman who's ever stood in front of a mirror can tell you, beauty secrets count too!
While the way we look may be only one part of who we are, it is still a part of us. And feeling that you look your best can be a real confidence booster.
Looking your best doesn't have to be complicated or expensive, either. Experts say most of us really only need to pay attention to a few basic beauty secrets - essentials that can help you look and feel great without spending a lot of time or money.
To help you find the beauty tips that really work, WebMD talked to top skin care and beauty experts, who parted with their personal tips for looking great:

Beauty Tip 1: Never Underestimate the Power of Moisturizer

Whether your skin is dry, normal, or even oily, if you can only afford one skin care product, experts say, your dollars will be well spent on a good moisturizer.
"Sometimes, all you really need is a good moisturizer and a mild cleanser, and you can take years off your face," says New York University professor Rhoda Narins, MD, president of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. When skin is dry, says Narins, every wrinkle is accentuated, making you look older.
If you're in your 20s or 30s, doctors say, moisturizers will give you some of the protection you need to keep skin from prematurely aging.
"In your 20s and early 30s, a good moisturizer can take the place of a lot of products," says Park Avenue plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD.
So what exactly is a "good" moisturizer? Dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD, describes it this way: "It's a product that will do anything from gently adding moisture, to sealing in the moisture you've achieved, to helping your skin produce more moisture -- and which type you choose should be based on your skin's individual needs."
If skin is normal to dry, look for moisturizers containing alpha hydroxy acids. They can help skin produce more moisture on its own, says Crutchfield, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
If skin is very dry, he also suggests products using a technology called vesicular emulsion.
"This technology uses microscopic spheres that are alternating layers of moisture and water that slowly release throughout the day, so you get continual moisturization," says Crutchfield.
If skin is oily, look for a light, gentle moisturizer - but don't skip this step, cautions Crutchfield.
"Oil is not moisture, and even if you have excess oil you still need moisture," he says.

Beauty Tip 4: Use the Right Tools for the Right Job

You can have the best eyeshadow money can buy, the world's most luxurious foundation, a bronzer straight from the cosmetic bag of a supermodel. But if you don't have the right tools to apply them, their benefits will be lost.
What constitutes the "right" tools? Brushes should be soft and feel gentle on the skin, but also have substance so the product can be moved to the surface of your skin. If you dip a brush in shadow or blush and the color falls off before you make it to your face, that's a bad brush, experts say.

Beauty Tip 5: Update Hair and Makeup Every 2 Years

If you walk into your high school reunion and hear a chorus of "You haven't changed a bit," run, run, RUN to the nearest beauty salon!
Experts say that if you can't even remember the last time you changed your hair and makeup, it's way overdue.
"Ideally, your image, including hair and makeup, should be updated at least every two years - and sooner if the styles change dramatically," says Beverly Hills hair expert and QVC personality Nick Chavez.
By keeping your look current, says Chavez, you also look younger and more modern. "Nothing dates a woman more than outdated hair and makeup," says Chavez.
If it's been a while since you've had a change, visit the makeup counters at your favorite department or beauty store, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Most of the better lines are sold by makeup artists who can quickly catch you up on what's new.Beauty Tip 2: Sunscreen Is Your Best Antiaging Product.

Before you see the plastic surgeon, before you plunk down half a paycheck on that pricey anti-aging cream, in fact, before you do anything, put on sunscreen.
While most of us know it reduces the risk of skin cancer, did you also know it's an amazing beauty secret that can help keep skin looking young?
The reason, say experts, is that when sunscreen blocks out the sun's damaging rays, it also blocks their aging effects.
"The sun impacts collagen production in the skin, and without collagen, skin won't naturally maintain that plump, moist, youthful, wrinkle-free look," says Antell. Get enough sun exposure, he says, and skin will wrinkle long before its time.
Without the protection of sunscreen, just a few minutes of daily sun exposure over the years can cause noticeable changes in how skin looks and feels, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Not only will you see more wrinkles and fine lines, but also more freckles, age spots, and spider veins. Skin itself can look rough and leathery or loose and slack - all thanks to the sun.
Sunscreen can protect your skin from these damaging rays, so that even if you do spend time outdoors, your face is less likely to give away your age.
Crutchfield advises choosing a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Because sun breaks down its effectiveness over time, if you're going to be in direct sunlight for an extended period, reapply every hour or two.
Another option: Use your regular sunscreen before putting on makeup (it should go on first, before anything). Then, for touch-ups, use a light, translucent mineral powder to add extra protection throughout the day.
"These powders contain a natural sunscreen, and since they generally don't build up on the skin you can keep adding protection all day long," says Crutchfield.

Beauty Tip 3: Choose Your Cleanser Wisely

If you're a "soap and water" girl (or guy), you may want to rethink your cleansing strategy. Dermatologists say that one of the best beauty tips around is to use the gentlest cleanser you can find - and use it sparingly.
"While the temptation may be great to wash your face several times a day (or more if skin is oily), not only will over-cleansing not help you, if you're using a harsh product -- particularly soap -- you could be harming your skin," says Crutchfield.
Wash your face too often - more than twice a day - and you can damage the natural lipid barrier, the protective mantle of lubrication that keeps skin looking and feeling healthy.
"Once that protection is lost, and the integrity of the skin barrier disrupted, skin becomes dry - which means it can crack, peel, itch, burn, sting, or any combination," says Crutchfield. It also means you can look older than your years.
The solution: Wash skin no more than twice a day and choose your cleanser wisely.
