Beauty Read: Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm

Here is the thing, while we love doing our own product testing and providing you guys with reviews, we were not the chemistry wiz like the writers over at The Beauty Brains. If you really want to know why a certain products works and get behind the marketing ploys by learning how exactly the ingredients work then you should really check their site out or buy their new book, Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm?: Top Cosmetic Scientists Answer Your Questions about the Lotions, Potions and Other Beauty Products You Use Every Day

As soon as I started reading the book, I was hooked! That's probably because they start right out with hair care dispelling myths and even bashing some super popular brands. When I say "bashing" I really mean breaking down their marketing tricks and giving the real deal to consumers. The book is in a really simple and easy to read format that allows you to skip around, read things you want to know about, and skip others to read for another time. It's great! I highly recommend you check it out before you buy another cosmetic item.

Hair Read: Unbeweaveable

If you follow me on Twitter, you already know I was reading Unbeweaveable by Katrina Spencer. Well let me just tell you, when a book is great it commands all my attention and I have to just keep reading and reading until I finish it. Unbeweaveable was a super quick read for me because I just couldn't put the book down. Without giving too much away, the main character Mariah Stevens draws all her confidence, take-charge attitude, and drive from her weave but when her world comes crumbling down and she's forced to remove her $1000+ weave and return home to her bi-racial sister and light-skinned mother who both have long "good" hair. The problem? Mariah is very dark skinned and has short coarse hair so all her life she grew up with insecurities and once she discovers a family secret it really rips open old wounds, but Mariah is determined to discover the truth. Beside the questionable title, Unbeweaveable goes way deeper than hair exploring family dynamics, love, and loyalty.
