Mixed Chicks vs Mixed Silk

Let the hair battle begin! Mixed Chicks is not happy with Sally's brand Mixed Silk. You know how Sally's is always creating their own brands and products based on popular "name brand" stuff? Well, this time they copied Mixed Chicks and they ain't having it!

Mixed Chicks LLC, maker of the well-known MIXED CHICKS® line of high-quality hair care products for individuals of mixed race or with curly hair, filed suit March 22, 2011 against Sally Beauty Supply LLC. In the lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, Mixed Chicks claims that Sally Beauty Supply and the other defendants are infringing on the MIXED CHICKS® trademark and the overall distinctive appearance of Mixed Chicks’ hair care products.

In the complaint, Mixed Chicks alleges that “Mixed Silk” products sold in Sally Beauty Supply stores infringe the distinctive trade dress of Mixed Chicks’ products, as well as the MIXED CHICKS® trademark. Mixed Chicks also alleges that Sally Beauty Supply uses the MIXED CHICKS® trademark on its web page search engine to direct consumers to Sally Beauty Supply’s infringing products. Mixed Chicks seeks damages and a permanent injunction from the court preventing Sally Beauty Supply from infringing the MIXED CHICKS® trademark and from using an overall appearance that is confusingly similar to that of Mixed Chicks’ Shampoo, Deep Conditioner, and Leave-In Conditioner. Mixed Chicks also seeks trebling of damages, reasonable attorneys’ fees, disgorgement of illegal profits from the sale of infringing products, and punitive damages in the complaint.

In connection with the lawsuit, Kim Etheredge, one founder and principal of Mixed Chicks, states: “We’ve worked hard to build the reputation of the Mixed Chicks product as one of high quality. We want our clients to know that the ‘Mixed Silk’ products have no connection with our products, and Mixed Chicks has not endorsed or authorized them. We will protect our brand whenever it’s necessary and appropriate.”

What do you think? Have you tried Mixed Silk?

Work Out Shampoo + Conditioner

Just a quick note to let you guys know that I have been working out lately! At New York Sports Club and the local one I visit has great shampoo and conditioner. Well, okay maybe it's not great by at home standards, but it's great for gym standards. The Lavender shampoo thoroughly cleansed my scalp and hair, leaving a great scent in the tiny shower stall all without stripping the moisture from my hair. The conditioner was in a huge bottle so I just used as much as I wanted to soften up and detangle my hair, it worked great and had a moderate amount of slip. My hair was easily detangled! After that I towel dried my hair a little bit added in my own conditioner from home and hopped in the steam room.

Moral of the story? Try out the supplies at the gym, they might not be as bad as you think. Plus, if you are paying for a membership use everything ... the sauna, steam room, towel service, etc. Oh and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear flip flops and don't put your bare butt on any surface without laying a clean towel down first. You might think this is common sense but ... trust me - it's not!

Hair Read: Lorraine Massey's Curly Girl

Lorraine Massey's new book, Curly Girl is a great read for anyone who is natural, going natural, has a curly child, or is just curious about curly hair. The book serves as a guide and a support group for ALL curlies, women, children, parents, and men! I was impressed with the wealth of information on not only type 1-3 but type 4 curls as well, from washing and conditioning, to styling, to cutting, and everything else in between. The book also comes with a DVD, which I actually haven't had a chance to check out yet.

Check it out for yourself.

Serena Williams is Dead ... Sort of

48027, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Tuesday November 11, 2010. HOLLYWOOD IS DEAD - CELEBRITIES POSE IN COFFINS AND GO OFF LINE IN 'DIGITAL DEATH' FOR WORLD AIDS DAY: A host of celebrities are raising money for charity by signing off their social networking sites for 24 hours - and playing dead in a series of macabre photographs. Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams and Swizz Beatz are all pictured lying flat out in their coffins. The stars also suffered a 'digital death' for one day and signed off all their Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts to raise cash for World Aids Day on Wednesday. They logged off on Tuesday and will not sign back on until $1 million has been raised for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive cause. During 'The Digital Life Sacrifice' they all filmed 'last tweet and testament' videos which will appear in ads showing them in coffins. Lady Gaga has more than seven million Twitter followers - while 3.5 million have signed up for Justin Timberlake's tweets. Alica Keys said: ''Once I got people on the phone and I was able to paint the concept for them, everybody was in. ''We're trying to make the remark, 'why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we're all from?'' Celebrities taking part also include P Diddy, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae, Kimberly Cole, David LaChapelle, Daphne Guinness and Bronson Pelletier. I like the idea of the Keep a Child Alive campaign but it's all a bit morbid don't you think? In attempts to raise money for charity a bunch of celebs will be logging off their social media accounts and playing dead "socially", meaning they will not sign back on until $1 million has been raised for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive cause.

Hair Read: Unbeweaveable

If you follow me on Twitter, you already know I was reading Unbeweaveable by Katrina Spencer. Well let me just tell you, when a book is great it commands all my attention and I have to just keep reading and reading until I finish it. Unbeweaveable was a super quick read for me because I just couldn't put the book down. Without giving too much away, the main character Mariah Stevens draws all her confidence, take-charge attitude, and drive from her weave but when her world comes crumbling down and she's forced to remove her $1000+ weave and return home to her bi-racial sister and light-skinned mother who both have long "good" hair. The problem? Mariah is very dark skinned and has short coarse hair so all her life she grew up with insecurities and once she discovers a family secret it really rips open old wounds, but Mariah is determined to discover the truth. Beside the questionable title, Unbeweaveable goes way deeper than hair exploring family dynamics, love, and loyalty.

Deal Spotter: Snag the book for just a few bucks on Amazon!

First Edition: Guess Whose Hair!

Guess whose hair this is!  Here's a clue.... she's been featured right here on The Anti Hair Slave before.

Here's another clue... it's not me! She is related to me...

The answer, more pictures, and her hair care regimen after the JUMP!

If you guessed, GRAM!  Then you are RIGHT!!!! Yup ladies that's my grandmother.  I swear as she gets older her hair just gets longer and thicker and these pics were taken after they stylists cut about 2-3 inches off her hair.

Isn't gram supercute?!!?  I know!  Okay so basically, Gram uses whatever shampoo and conditioner is in the house.  She leaves her conditioner on for a least 5 minutes with no heat, then she blows and curls her hair.  She does that once a week and she might touch up her bangs once during the week if needed with the curling iron.  She loves Biosilk for shine and that's pretty much it.  How simple is that?!?  None of this moisturizing and sealing every night or using growth aids.  One thing she does do it put her hair in a ponytail and cover it with a scarf before bed.

She is self-relaxed and she touches it up every 8 weeks and self-trims as needed.  She also colors her hair, either she'll do it herself or I'll put it in for her.

Change Your Hair Texture - Pop a Pill

Pills on a spoon

The internet has been buzzing with talk of the pill that can change your hair texture. Hair bloggers all over are questioning their readers, "would you take a pill to make your hair straight?" Yet, there is little talk about changing from straight to curly, which the pill is also said to do. Check out the original article here.

I think it's a tad bit freaky actually, to take something internally to change the hair texture. I mean applying relaxer to the hair is one thing, that's external but taking a pill? Nah, I'll pass. With an external relaxer I can control the amount of straightening I want to have, with a pill who knows what might happen. Plus, imagine the possible side effects of this. My guesses are excessive shedding, loss of thickness, baldness, increase in hair growth in other places, change in the texture of your eyebrows, and who knows what else!
